Gary U. Bussa started working at the Columbus Zoological Gardens at the age of thirteen. He started in the petting barn and worked his way up to show animals. Gary then had a chance in his senior year of high school to take the zoology course at Tolles Technical Center. In the course of study, he was able to learn and work nearly every department at the zoo. Gary had a great experience in departments like pachyderms, birds, herbivores, carnivores, animal diet kitchen, and the animal hospital just to name a few. His favorite area was performing shows and working with reptiles. Gary loved taking the stage with his animal friends while at the same time, providing education to the public about these fascinating creatures . In 1989, Gary graduated John Robert Powers School of Acting and shortly after received a certification in Zoology. After working at the Columbus Zoo, Gary moved to South Florida to continue his college studies. In South Florida, he started working as an educator at The Museum of Discovery and Science. Gary wrote several educational programs for outreaches to local area schools and performed their animal shows. While working at the museum, Gary met Rochelle Hawkins. Rochelle worked at the museum with Gary as an assistant before starting college at the University of Miami. Gary and Rochelle married later in 2003. Rochelle has her Bachelors in Biology, Licensed in Clinical Microbiology and has a Doctorate in Pharmacy. While Rochelle was going to school, Gary opened his own business performing animal shows for various community events in Florida. His business was called Des Coveries Hands on Education and Entertainment. Rochelle and Gary moved to Kentucky to be closer to family and further her career. Gary soon discovered that there were no zoological gardens or science museums in Ashland, Kentucky. He really enjoyed working with people and animals and providing both education and entertainment together both for the kids and adults of South Florida. Gary decided it was time to resurrect Des Coveries in Kentucky. Gary based his name off of a character, Dr. Des Covery that he wrote in one of his educational shows for schools. The favorite doctor was like Dr. Indian Jones and loved to go on wild adventures and explore the world around him especially the world of animals. It was favorite character of the kids. Through imagination he shows the kids how to be explorers themselves. Des Coveries is now performing at schools, churches, malls, and for many other groups. A Des Coveries favorite is Birthday Party Shows.
